Leadership in Guilds Online: Haven for Inbreeding?

•December 5, 2008 • Leave a Comment

So I’m in a guild on WoW right now… and it’s run by a group of friends. So, I’m kinda just a spoke in the wheel of leadership, just someone they go to in times of need. However, while observing their leadership behaviors, I was appalled. No one was able to see beyond the other person’s nose… they just kept pushing the same ideas and observations, nothing at all insightful. Seriously… I don’t know that I have ever seen such bad leadership… and from some people who have had leadership in other organizations and projects before. It kinda amazed me. So lets break it down:

Basically, their goal was to have a group trained and converted for raiding, but this group of individuals was barely able to follow instructions and do decent gaming. Sad pandas. However, in order to get there, they were willing to sacrifice everyone in the way because they had not devoted 2 weeks since the release of the expansion to leveling to 80. Now, this requires someone with few other objectives in life (ie sleep, work, school, ect. sparingly practiced). Understandable that they want to play with skilled individuals with lots of time to spare… but they are not willing to communicate this idea below, instead just merge (messages being sent to the underlings?) to get all the people they wanted and shaft the remaining people… sad pandas indeed…

Aside from trying to get what they want (which is technically impossible without the effort to train people and create a new atmosphere in the guild), they were not willing to communicate, build relationships, or assess the climate of the guild. It was essentially only looking out for a few individuals at the top and not getting any backing from the majority. Ethical issues aside, I think it’s about as bad of a leader as you can get… no matter what philosophy of leadership you adhere to…

Standardized Testing – Standards To Failure

•December 1, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Standardized Testing is the bane of education in some regards. Most importantly, I believe that it lowers the standards of education significantly.

First of all, due to the value placed in standardized testing from the government, many schools will lose benefits if a specified number of students do not pass the test. The other problem from this stems from teaching tests. If teachers have the concerns of the schools and where that federal paycheck is coming from, they will ultimately teach kids how to take this particular test. It’s a common problem that plagues the American education system. Students don’t learn material, they learn how to test. Furthermore, due to the high failure rates, the standards have been lowered… Wow… Talk about awesomeness… But currently there is no workaround unless a school has lots of money… shame..

Point is, aside from educational policy, and the fact that i discredited you ST scores as being significant by any means… Education needs a buff. I think the mindset of education should stay pertinent to education.

This is too funny. I cannot believe this happened. What is humanity coming to?!?! lol!!! I’m just kidding, but seriously!?!? Sometimes I wonder about people’s thoughts… not that mine are any saner..

However, props to the student who wanted a hug from a panda. Aside form some good laughs, it’s actually kinda cool… hug from a panda… it just went a little wrong -_^!!

Goodbye Art… Amazing stuff. Ok, so for those of you interested, here is the link:

http://www.philinthecircle.com/

The guy actually stopped doing this… but it was amazing stuff, from regurgitating food unto a canvas and painting with it, Oreo cookie designs, or a Jimi Hendrix match burning model. Fascinating because he not only does it, but documents the process. I really respect this guys work. Nuf said.

C&C Red Alert 3: A Short Review

•November 15, 2008 • Leave a Comment

So yeah, totally got this game after being out of the C&C scene for a while. Just to give you a little perspective, I haven’t really played a C&C game since… like Command & Conquer: Tiberium Sun, when Westwood was the publisher… O_o!! Long time ago…

Anyways, the game itself is ok. I’m  over 1/2 way through the single player.. and find it dismally easy. No real challenge, except to the random overheating of my computer, lol!! I haven’t tried out the multiplayer yet, but I imagine it’s ok, since that seems to be the real focus of these games. But as far as a fun time, it’s ok. The most surprising thing of all was the advertising, portrayal of the females in the cast and box art. Totally objectifying women, lol!!! It’s nothing you wouldn’t see on the streets, but it’s still kinda surprising to need to use that to sell a game.. oh how close is video games to any other entertainment medium?

Hair

That’s right, the stuff on your head (if you have it…). Actually, I’m more concerned about hair dye. First off, I’d like to say I’m addicted. Totally!! But, I think what is more important is the people who work with hair. Every place I’ve gone to get my hair done has had a frenzy of excitement getting to do random dying and cuts to my hair (relative to the normal business). They often say that this was the reason they got into hairstyling… or something along those lines. But regardless, I actually got a letter from my last place saying how much they had a blast working on my hair.

Point is, make a hairstylist happy, do something new!! ^_^

So this is the test (since I modified the other)… See the adjacent post for details…

Time Warp

Ok, so this is mostly just an interesting experiment to see what happens if I change the publishing dates around to make this post before Dec 10?! (At least as far as the blog can tell)… So, I will post the results of these findings here!!!

Edit: So this actually rearranges the posts according to publishing date… O_o!!! Fascinating, some real possibilities in editing data… makes for a wild internet validity issues… Just remember that the next time you read a blog or find yourself needing to make some illegitimate edits ^_^!! Although it does register the last editing date (and I believe the ACTUAL post date in detail on the hardlink.. but who checks that… ^_^)

Ludacris – One More Drink

So I found this video and song hilarious. Absolutely great satire on single culture and the perpetuation of love values in the world. Not that I’m apposed to love and the fantasy of love, it’s just his message rings true. It’s just great that he uses drinking as a form to lower standards of appearance in mate choice. Now we all know this probably more likely to happen then a sudden sociological change in love perceptions… but one can hope, especailly with satire like this!! ^_^ Enjoy the song:

Kanye West’s Style

So I found it interesting how Kanye is chaging his musical style. I basically sum it up to the fact that he likely has the monetary support and publishing power to be able to experiment with his style and music. Some people attribute it to his mother’s recent passing, but I wonder if that has a significance on his stylistic changes.

So what really changed?!?! Well, originally, I would say that Kanye approach was more oriented to pushing his awesomeness, to put it lightly. Now, he still incorporates it in this style, but he masks it with a more subtle edge. Also, he using more cultural references in his pieces. For example, he used Akira as a reference in his Stonger video. However, he has taken it steps further with posters of the Jetsons in his Heartless video.

I like the new style, uses alot more psychology to attract listeners to the content of his songs as well as references to past culture. I look forward to his later works.
